PS5, for the first time a PlayStation increases in price
Sony’s sensational decision raises PlayStation 5 prices by 50 euros worldwide: in Italy the version with Blu-ray player costs 549 euros, 449 euros the all-digital version. An unprecedented change in the history of consoles, which generally tend to sell at a falling price after a few years on the market. The PS5 is almost two years late: it was launched in November 2020, but until now it has always been very difficult to get one in stores, due to the microchip crisis, manufacturing difficulties in China and the huge demand. . Sony recently said it had passed 20 million units sold of the new machine, which, despite being a rarity, is confirmed to be the fastest-selling PlayStation ever.
To ensure that more and more people could have the console, Sony was forced to raise the price. In the words of Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan: “The global business environment is a challenge that many people around the world will face. We are seeing high rates of inflation, as well as adverse trends that are affecting consumers and creating pressures on many industries. Based on these compelling economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the MSRP of the PlayStation 5 in certain territories.” By selected territories, Ryan means Europe, United Kingdom, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada. The US is currently out and the price remains unchanged. This way, Sony is confident to increase inventory and be able to meet demand. Meanwhile, it also announced a possible new upcoming pro controller, the DualSense Edge.
